To begin developing a suicide prevention program that is most appropriate to your workplace, review the “How Mentally Healthy is Your Workplace?” checklist to assess your organization’s strengths and weaknesses and identify current gaps in a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention and mental health promotion. Your responses can guide you to the best area below for you to begin your work. For example, if you answered “no” to providing on-going education on mental health issues, this might be a place to start.
If your workplace is currently responding to a suicide crisis (a suicide death or attempt by an employee or family member of an employee), start by clicking the crisis management box. Otherwise, start where you think your workplace might have the greatest readiness. When considering what area you might be most ready to change, ask yourself these questions:
If your organization has both high leadership support and high organizational support, then you are ready for change. If you lack one of these elements, you may be ready for learning, but will need to get more buy-in before successful change can happen. Start with the areas where you have both high levels of leadership and organizational support.
